J-B Weld SteelStik Epoxy saved the day

I’m always a little skeptical about miracle fixes that will save hundreds of dollars. I also don’t like to spend hundreds of dollars if I don’t need too.

Previously I wrote about my Lotus Europa’s leaking gas tank and the attempt to plug the hole using J-B Weld SteelStik Epoxy. What I discovered is that SteelStik doesn’t stick well to wet metal. It does stick but a slow leak continued.

This scenario gave me a good excuse to go for a long drive in the country and burn off some fuel. Yeah, I could just drain the fuel tank but what fun would that be? Once the tank was half full the gas level is below the hole and I was able to dry and clean the area well.

Guess what? SteelStik sticks very well to dry materials. I no longer have a leak and the repair while not looking particularly nice looks very secure. Will it last? Time will tell. Hopefully many more small holes won’t make appearances or I might be pulling the fuel tank.
