A lot can be learned from the build plate on my new to me Lotus Europa S2. The car was built in June, 1970 with a serial number of 0496R. The R here refers to the federalized version of the S2. The Europa is a type 65 with engine number 1298 and transmission number 1452.
Lotus-Europa.com has a registry with a number of Europas listed built the same day. What’s interesting about this list is you realize how many Lotus Europas are making their way back to Europe. Perhaps this is why they are becoming difficult to find in good condition over here. I know many Lotus cars were sold to the Japanese at one point as well.
The paint code is LO 10 referring to Bahama Yellow as in the image below. It’s certainly an interesting colour. So far on my explorations while sorting my Europa I haven’t found any sign of this original colour. Perhaps when I take the headliner off something will turn up.
What does show up is red paint in a number of areas. Was this Europa originally carnival red like 0499R?
